The design proposal aims to achieve a unique visionary project for the city of Suncheon, by promoting sustainability and innovation, while preserving and contributing to Korean traditions and culture. The concept represents an emblematic and harmonious set of structures, landscape and open public spaces, interwoven through encircling alleys that follow a curved pattern. They form an original composition that relates to the specifics of the surrounding urban and architectural context. The three alleys begin from ground level to reach different heights along the main curved pattern around the Suncheon Art Plaza. Three belvederes are designed at the end of the alleys, offering magnificent views towards the city. The main feature of the composition – the upward spiral – is a symbol of progress, prosperity and optimism. The culmination of the project is the contemporary stylized tower, a reminder of the old Yeonja-ru, which used to stand there. The design of the roofs and the belvederes is inspired by the traditional Korean architecture. The Suncheon Art plaza follows the general pattern and slowly flows into the shape inspired by the national flag of South Korea, so as to underline the project’s significance for the community. The Plaza is closely connected with the main street – Joongang-ro, in order to form a significant pedestrian artery. Three stylized green pillars are situated along the street to act as noise barriers together with the massive vegetation and trees. The design provides the community with a multifunctional space that will serve as a social hub promoting creativity, inspiration and innovation. It will engage visitors in cultural activities, educational programs, concerts, exhibits and will also be a place for community gatherings or individual retreat. The diversity of functions will make the Art Platform a landmark for Suncheon. The concept emphasizes on green design and ecological features. All roofs are vegetated and form the Suncheon Art Promenade, elevated at different levels, thus achieving connectivity and accessibility throughout the site and the adjacent neighborhoods. Local vegetation is planted on the slightly slopped roofs. The hanging gardens offer visitors unique panoramas and place for recreation and contemplation of outer art exhibitions. All construction materials are natural and locally-sourced in order to reach maximum levels of sustainability. They are implemented in the concept’s ecological features, such as the green roofs, vegetated walls and local stone for the pavements, as well as the wood decking for the amphitheaters and some of the alleys. The ground level Parking space for 109 cars is covered by a green roof perforated with glass-covered circular openings to the sky that provide natural light, thus creating a unique atmosphere. Following the art-related character of the concept, the space of the parking can annually host an event – The Art of Graffiti fest, where its inner walls will be painted with the best graffiti works. An additional underground level could be constructed, if necessary. The Art Café is situated in a way that it offers direct views towards the Yeonja-ru, the Plaza and the river. It has terraced roof with designated space for tables.
